Mother Nature paints quite the masterpiece as it showcases the most colorful geothermal spot and true marvel of magmatic activity in all of the North and South Islands of New Zealand: Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. A highlight of Rotorua tourism, Wai-O-Tapu is nature’s eye candy and a must-see sight for backpackers and others on a New Zealand vacation. Bring your camera – this scenic reserve is the place for New Zealand pictures. Colliding tectonic plates caused volcanic eruptions, thermal pools, geysers, silica, boiling mud, and immense steam pressure which formed an unusual landscape of stunning geological natural beauty. An 1886 volcanic eruption of Mt. Tarawera created this unique ecosystem on what became known as “Primrose Terrace,” the largest silica terrace in the southern hemisphere. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is located south and east of Auckland on the New Zealand map between Rotorua and Taupo and is easily reachable from Christchurch by Rotorua flights. The reserve conjures a magmatic cocktail of incredible color produced by steam discharge and mineral absorption in water super heated from magma left over from previous volcanic eruptions. The park is a top recommendation of any Rotorua or Auckland, New Zealand hotel, motel, or other New Zealand accommodations as well as that of any car hire or rental because of its well earned luxury tourism reputation. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland (the name means “sacred waters”) is pure New Zealand eye candy. Volcanic activity and eruption dating back 160,000 years has created uniqueness in the landscape due to steam discharge, acid-sulphate water, and alkali-chloride water. These conditions result in three main areas which have been constructed and developed with ecological sensitivity at to maximize nature’s beauty with self guided walks. The main walk goes through an area of collapsed craters to brilliant hued lakes and surrounding landscape to Artists’s Pallette, a viewing area overlooking stunning Champagne Pool. Champagne Pool holds international significance as the most stunning hot spring in New Zealand, and its name is derived from the champagne colored carbon dioxide bubbles it emits into its 74-degree surface water pool, creating a hot steamy atmosphere around the pool’s side. The turquoise and ochre colors are far more intense than the attraction’s namesake drink. The second walk passes through manuka and wind blown twisting Pinus Contorti trees to a vista point overlooking Ohaaki, the Kaingaroa Forest, Blue and Green Lakes, Sulphur Mounds and the Alum Cliffs. The third walk leads past the Wai-O-Tapu geyser and Alum Cliffs into the 760-year old green crater Lake Ngakoro. Other breathtaking vistas to be experienced at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland include Rainbow Crater, Sulpher Cave, Silica Terrace Crossing, and the standout Lady Knox Geyser, which is a separate park feature. Incredible landscape overlooks, bubbling and boiling mud fields, brilliantly hued waters, and nature’s surreal color show make this geological gem a magnificent, magmatic showstopper on your New Zealand tour. |
