While on a two month backpacking journey through New Zealand, Australian owners Phil and Pauline Evans impulsively decided to relocate there and opened the doors of The Tree House Backpackers Lodge New Zealand in 1989. Other backpackers passing through, who stayed in the eight beds in the back of the house, and locals, would help the couple unpack boxes, lay carpet, build and paint things.

From such simple beginnings, The Tree House Backpackers Lodge, Kohukohu, New Zealand today offers room for up to twelve people three cabins, a housebus, two shared rooms in the wooden homestead, as well as three tent sites, set within a peaceful, natural garden of native forest, subtropical plants, and birds. Natural gravel paths and boardwalk connect carpark, building, and facilities.

The main building contains kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities. Guests bring their own food to a fully equipped kitchen. Sheets, pillows, and pillowcases are provided but guests must bring other beddings. All buildings are smoke-free. Cabins and share rooms are heated in winter.

The hostel is located on the Hokianga Harbour enroute to Waipoua Kauri Forest from Cape Reinga or Bay of Islands, which is an hour’s drive away. It’s a good base to explore west coast beaches and forests toward the North Island tip. Drive up and down a mountain to The Tree House, Kohukohu on lots of fun, winding roads. A rental car in New Zealand might help you explore the area.

The ride renders some great views across huge pine forests, valleys with green rolling hills, mangrove flats, and low flying birds of prey. The Northland NZ backpacker is tucked away amongst the bush. The setting offers a great place to chill out on a nice balcony or in a cozy common room with plenty of books and cushions — great relaxation activities on a New Zealand vacation.

The Tree House, Kohukohu also operates self contained Kohukohu Cottage, located beside Hokianga Harbour in the village of Kohukohu, within walking distance of the harborside shop and café and not far from the ferry. Pick up the key and directions to the cottage at the Tree House main facility.

The cottage has expansive harbor views from the veranda, bedrooms, and living room. One queen bed and a second room with a double and single bed come with linen, duvets, and towels. Bathroom contains a bath and shower with toilet in an adjacent room. Cooking facilities include cook tops, countertop oven, microwave, refrigerator, and BBQ grill.
