There are cultural attractions worth a visit when you take your New Zealand vacation to Nelson.

You can start at the Suter Art Gallery, with its collection of 19th century works.

  • You can learn about native Maori Culture from a Creative Tourism workshop.

There are also many gardens offering peaceful strolls. A few to check out are the Miyazu Japanese Garden and Queens Gardens.

If you came to New Zealand looking for an outdoor adventure, Nelson is the place for you. Nelson is less than two hours from Abel Tasman National Park, and there are many other sights nearer to town. For day hikers, the Nelson Walkways are a good bet, as is the Maitai Valley and Cable Bay.

With its good weather and relaxed ambiance, Nelson has also become a hub for spas. Many of the town’s luxury accommodation options offer in-house spa services, but even if you’re staying in a more modest hotel, motel or hostel you can book treatments from facials to massages to aromatherapy sessions.

Even after you leave the spa, it’s easy to maintain your new found relaxation with a stroll in one of the beautiful gardens, or by taking in the sunset over Tasman Bay.

Nelson New Zealand is also a foodie’s paradise, especially for fish lovers. It’s only natural that New Zealand’s largest fishing port offers up great, fresh fish and shellfish. You can also get fresh organic produce at the Nelson Market, held every Saturday in the center of town. The area has a host of over 20 wineries, making this truly a great eating destination. Cooking for yourself or visiting one of the many great restaurants in town is a culinary experience you won’t soon forget.

Nelson New Zealand is located more or less in the geographic center of the country, making it easy to reach from various locations on both the South and North Island. If you are coming from the south, you can get to Nelson by rental car in New Zealand from cities like Picton (2 hours) or Christchurch (6 hours). Taking a ferry from Wellington to Picton and then connecting by bus is another alternative. There are also flights directly to Nelson Airport from other major cities in New Zealand.

With such a great atmosphere and so many things to see, it’s really no surprise that Nelson New Zealand is a favorite with both Kiwis and foreign visitors. Nelson New Zealand is the kind of destination that people come back to again and again.
