Arthur Dobson had it right when he said this was the best way over the Southern Alps of NZ. The Southern Alps offer some of the best scenery in the country, and Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand is no exception. Like the more southern Haast Pass, this area offers sightseeing and photography opportunities that other destinations can only envy. With mountain views, forests, narrow rivers, plunging waterfalls and clean alpine air, you’re sure to enjoy yourself. Arthur’s Pass New Zealand is a paradise for walkers. If you have a few hours to spare you can do a short day hike on trails with colorful names like the Bridal Veil and Devil’s Punch Bowl. Both walks will take you through great alpine scenery, with beech forests and views of the Southern Alps that will take your breath away. Trekkers and serious walkers can find longer and more challenging walks as well. There are some more technical climbing routes available, and if you’re looking to do some back country tramping, a series of huts make camping easy. While visiting the area, keep an eye on the trees, and the ground, for a chance to see some unusual birds, including the great spotted kiwi, which is currently endangered. Birders will also want to look for bellbirds, fantails, keas, and others. While most travelers travel the country by ferry, on foot, or using a rental car in New Zealand, Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand offers a unique alternative: the TranzAlpine railway. The train starts in Christchurch and terminates in Greymouth, making the round trip once a day. The scenic railway passes through some truly captivating scenery and is one of the best ways to view the pass. You can alight at Arthur’s Pass Village or just pass through. If rail is not an option, you can also reach Arthur’s Pass by car. It’s easily accessible from either Greymouth or Christchurch via State Highway 73. The distances are 55 and about 100 miles respectively. There is also a new shuttle service that takes visitors from either the West Coast or Christchurch to the village. Spending the night in Arthur’s Pass Village is a great way to break up the journey from the East to West coasts of the South Island. There are many accommodation options to choose from. There are backpackers’ hostels, motels as well as B&Bs. There are not a lot of luxury options, like resort hotels however. Travelers to Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand will want to book ahead for train tickets and accommodation, especially in the busy summer months. You can also find information on trail closures and weather updates on the internet. With careful planning, nothing can ruin your New Zealand vacation in beautiful Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand. |
