History of Otago Museum New Zealand dates to the 1870’s when its early emphasis was on mineral research. A geological survey revealed rocks and minerals considered important enough to add to the collection of typical mineral specimens originally designated for the museum by the provincial government of London. Later, the museum was transferred to the University of Otago and its affiliation continues today.

Otago Museum New Zealand features an extensive collection of coins, Oriental arms, and Maori material — including New Zealand greenstone — housed in the south Willi Fels Wing.
