Ahipara is a wonderful place to begin your exploration of New Zealand’s 90 Mile Beach on its northern end. This small town of 1,100 residents is located at the southern end of the beach, and it’s only 14 kilometers away from Kaitaia, New Zealand’s northernmost large town. Kauri gum was once a major commodity in the area, and its extraction supported about two thousand people; now the Ahipara Gumfields remain behind as relics of that time, open to visitors along with the kauri forests where the gum was once harvested.

Try riding a quad bike along the vast sand dunes to get great exercise and amazing views of rolling hills of sand and beautiful blue waves. Or take a more formal quad bike tour to explore the extensive Ahipara Gumfields Scenic Reserve.

The diversity of houses in the area will also amaze tourists. Some houses were designed by master architects and are worth seeing for their elegance and refinement. Other houses are makeshift shanties inhabited by residents who collect seaweed for a living.
