New Zealand Food and Drink: Authentic Picnic Foods

Right now it is picnic season in New Zealand. Christmas celebrations and New Year’s celebrations are often held outdoors on the beach, much like what we do in the U.S. during Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. If you are in New Zealand on vacation right now and are interested in participating in a picnic event then you will want to pack yourself an authentic New Zealand picnic meal.

If you are interested in an authentic New Zealand picnic, then you can sample foods from the Maori food list. The Maori’s word for food is “kai.” Some kai that you can pack in your picnic basket include Rewena paroroa (Maori bread), eel, puka (special greens), Tohu wine and Taeva tutaekuri (Maori purple potatoes). Find these foods at local Maori markets or at special cultural events.

If you are more interested in modern New Zealand picnic foods then you can try some of these New Zealand picnic favorites. The first is a bacon and egg pie. It is made like a quiche with eggs, bacon, spices and onion. Sausage rolls, similar to pigs in a blanket are also a favorite. Finally you can try stuffed eggs and mousetraps. Stuffed eggs are a lot like deviled eggs and mousetraps are a cheddar and onion sandwich on whole wheat bread.

While on your New Zealand holiday make sure you sample some authentic New Zealand food and drink. Also don’t forget to have some fun participating in high energy New Zealand outdoor activities and events.
