December is the perfect time of year to visit New Zealand. The weather is warm, there are lots of holiday events to attend and just about all of the country’s tourist attractions are open for business. If you will be visiting the North Island this month then here are a couple of attractions that you won’t want to miss.
The first activity that I recommend to the more adventurous is the Taupo Tandem Sky Dive. Now I am afraid of heights, but in my opinion, sky diving is one of the best experiences that you will ever have, if you can get yourself out the plane’s door. This particular adventure will take you to between 6,000 and 15,000 feet where you and your tandem partner will exit the plane. You will free fall for a few thousand feet before the parachute is deployed. Tandem sky diving is a great option for people who have never gone sky diving as well as for people who want to film their adventure and don’t want to worry about pulling the cord and handling their camera at the same time. As you descend, keep your eyes open, as you will be traveling over the beautiful Lake Taupo, as well as next to several volcanoes.
If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, then consider visiting the Buried Villages and the Te Wairoa Museum. Here you will be able to explore the remnants and artifacts of the villages buried by the June 10, 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. This tourist attraction offers guided tours at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. and the museum is located a short, but beautiful, 15 minute drive from Rotrua.
