Located between the towns of Manapouri and Te Anau, Barnyard Backpackers Rainbow Downs Lake Te Anau New Zealand is well-positioned to facilitate exploration of the region’s many walking tracks as well as the beautiful scenery of Milford Sound. Going south to Manapouri, you’ll gain access to 60 kilometers of walking pleasure on the Kepler Track and the great panoramic views of Doubtful Sound. Book your hostel reservation here for New Zealand This backpackers accommodation is unique for its location on a deer farm. Many lovable, friendly pets also inhabit the lodge’s premises. In the main lodge of this backpackers NZ hostel, you’ll be able to cook in the kitchen, use the laundry facilities, and relax in the lounge. The visitor cabins are just down the hill from the lodge; this is where you’ll find television access - even in the dorm rooms! Each of the cabins at Barnyard Backpackers Rainbow Downs Lake Te Anau New Zealand contains its own heating system as well as a shower and bathroom. Remarkably, all of these buildings were created by the hostel’s owner, John Barker, some 20 years ago. They are so sturdily constructed that when a monstrous earthquake of 7.2 magnitude on the Richter Scale hit the area in 2003, none of the houses were damaged one bit! Just ten kilometers (6 miles) away is a breathtaking South Island lake: Lake Te Anau - whose name derives from the Maori expression for “The cave of swirling water.” At 344 square kilometers, Lake Te Anau is the South Island’s largest and the second-largest in NZ, just behind Lake Taupo. The Te Anau township is nearby, along with the farming settlement of Te Anau Downs or Rainbow Downs, so called for the great frequency of spectacular rainbows in the area. Bird watchers will find the Lake Te Anau area a treat. Here, you’ll be able to spot both the humorous, mischievous Kea and the endangered, beautiful Takahe. A prominent, colorful Takahe sculpture can also be found in the Te Anau township, and a visit to the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary will give you glimpses at tens of these remarkable creatures. Fiordland National Park with its tremendous variety of scenic terrain attracts so many tourists that Te Anau offers 3,000 beds to them every summer. Compare that to the town’s local population of about 1,857! If you seek to enjoy the area while keeping away from the crowd, then Barnyard Backpackers Rainbow Downs Lake Te Anau is sufficiently far outside the town to enable this. Come and sample the delights of this region on your New Zealand vacation!
