Seeking adventure travel on your New Zealand tour? Taupo hotels and lodge accommodation will quickly steer you toward the area’s beautiful volcanic mountain and lake setting.

The largest volcanic eruption of the past 5,000 years carved the Lake Taupo region into a unique geological backdrop perfectly suited to outdoor exhilaration and relaxation at Lake Taupo New Zealand, the largest freshwater lake in Australasia.

Just an hour’s ride from Rotorua, the more adventurous can bungee jump over the Waikato River, sky dive over Lake Taupo, rides a four-wheel vehicle over volcanic farmland, ski on an active volcano, or fly over Tongariro World Heritage National Park at Lake Taupo New Zealand.

Those seeking more relaxing experiences can choose a thermal hot spring soak, cruise to see the famous Maori rock carvings at Mine bay, and some of the world’s best trout fishing. Secluded beaches, boutique shopping, dining on geothermally bred prawns and other local cuisine, are other great features.

Like most of New Zealand, Lake Taupo New Zealand has a rich Maori history, dating back to the 14th century. Tribal chief Tia discovered this inland area and came across a rock formation that he thought resembled his heavy cloak. He hung his taupo on the site and proclaimed the area as Taupo nui a Tia, or The Great Cloak of Tia.

Subsequent Maori legend rendered powerful volcanic eruptions which took place as a response to a later Maori settler’s request for heat from the fire gods. Maori historical attractions are some of the area’s popular touring options.

European settlers didn’t arrive until the 1840’s. The first recorded visitor was Andrew Powers, who was captured by Maori and brought to Taupo. Missionaries and tourism trade followed by 1845 and the town was on its way to developing into its modern day spot for recreational tourism.

Of course the fire and ice that debuted with a big bang around 186 AD were the catalysts that sculpted today’s stunning volcanic playground. The world heritage Mt. Ngauruhoe volcano (which starred as “Mt. Doom” in the movie Lord of the Rings) is testimony to the breathtaking geothermal scenery that attracts visitors.

The park makes up the largest ski area in New Zealand, and also offers travelers an exceptional natural health spa with boiling mud pools, steaming geysers, and hot mineral waters beneath the stars. Lake Taupo New Zealand is all about fire and ice and everything nice. It is an excellent place to visit on your New Zealand vacation.
