The slightly whacky, offbeat, “funky green” eccentric is well served by Funky Green Voyager, a most highly rated backpacker’s hostel in New Zealand. Funky Green Voyager has no problem living up to its name in its appropriate geothermal setting hot spot of Rotorua. Everything about Funky Green Voyager New Zealand seems to make quirky sense. Respect the no-shoes policy upon entering this North Island hostel to keep floors shiny and mud-free. Take your items from the washing machines to dry on outside clothes lines. The friendly staff is known for obsessive recycling, with bins for paper, plastic, glass, and tin placed right outside the door and a combined plastic bag located in the kitchen. Speaking of kitchens, FGV boasts a sparkling, white-tiled state of the art version with updated appliances to lure cooking enthusiasts or simply pamper instant noodle carrying backpackers. Eggs for sale and abundant ingredients on hand for free use coincide with the hostel’s peculiar coziness and home-away-from-home ease. There’s no TV, but internet access maintains a link to contemporary civilization, and when World Wide Web connectedness isn’t a priority, plenty of books and board games can be enjoyed with others around the large dining room table, in the comfy couch lavished sunroom, or attractive garden complete with spa pool and barbeque. Scrabble, Monopoly, and cards are FGV gaming mainstays. A fireplace lounge adds to the quaint hostel atmosphere. Cleanliness rules supreme throughout this small backpacker’s hostel with a good supply of fresh bedding, towels, soap, hot showers, and sparkling common areas whether you stay in a simple dorm room or luxurious ensuite accommodation. Bathrooms are welcome and noticeable improvements over less clean counterparts in some Christchurch, New Zealand hostels. At Funky Green Voyager Hostel you can walk across the street to the 24-hour grocery or stroll several blocks to the city center from its quiet residential street location but you may not want to, as an honor system tempts to prolong relaxation with a little money jar perched near the refrigerator kept well stocked with beer. The clean, laid back atmosphere is a sharp contrast to rowdy, lesser maintained hostel choices in Auckland, New Zealand, a short 45-minute commute by Rotorua flights. Bathrooms are known to amuse with big signs that say “Nice Ass” accompanied by an explanation that the wipes for the seats are provided to keep it that way. Perhaps the wackiest feature at FGV is the clear plastic designer toilet seat encasing jagged barded wire inside…could it be the hostel’s subtle method to dissuade excessively long reigns on the throne? Rotorua hotels, or any motels or other New Zealand accommodations found on a north or south island New Zealand experience would be hard pressed and green with envy, not environmental consciousness, to match the bizarre, eco-friendliness of Funky Green Voyager Hostel. It’s a must stop on any backpacker’s New Zealand vacation tour. |
