Looking for New Zealand outdoor activities underwater? Dive Poor Knights Islands New Zealand to find them. Located off the mainland of NZ, the Poor Knights Islands near Tutukaka are surrounded by remarkably warm water, whose temperature is made possible by a warm current from Australia’s Coral Sea. When you scuba dive here, you can see amazingly far, and the variety of sights available is simply astounding. The Poor Knights Islands were created about 11 million years ago from a volcanic explosion. Today, the Poor Knights Marine Reserve houses hundreds of tropical fish species, including ones unique to the area. Fishing here is prohibited since 1981, but as a result, the fish have had a chance to grow in population and spread to other areas, providing a bounty for fishermen there. There are two shipwrecks near the Poor Knights Islands, but they were not the results of tragedy. Rather, they were put there on purpose. The HMNZS Tui used to be a United States Navy ship that guarded New Zealand’s fleet near Mururua. Now the Tui can be found about two kilometers to the north of Tutukaka Heads. The HMNZS Waikato, a former frigate, has its final resting place south of Tutukaka Heads by 2 kilometers. You’ll still be able to see its massive guns and hangar for helicopters. You can even journey into the wrecked ships themselves. Special entry and exit routes were cut into the wrecks just for that purpose. When you dive Poor Knights Islands New Zealand, you’ll be confident knowing that the environment around you has been carefully arranged to ensure the maximum possible levels of safety and enjoyment. If you’ve never gone diving before, have no fear. Services like Dive! Tutukaka offer an extensive variety of courses for all levels of experience. Highly skilled instructors including naturalists, wreck specialists, and marine biologists will guide you every step of the way toward becoming adept at diving and able to enjoy the marvelous sights it provides.
