The Church of the Good Shepherd building stands out against turquoise Lake Tekapo like something in a classic landscape painting. No stained glass windows needed at this Episcopal church – the panoramic clear glass sanctuary window was designed to inspire worshipers’ awe with its magnificent view! With its history chronicled by the NZ Historic Place Trust, the church was built as a memorial to area pioneers by Christchurch architect Richard Harman based on a drawing by artist Esther Hope. Glacier-fed brilliant turquoise waters and distant snowcapped mountains paint a memorable background for stunning photography. Tour buses stop daily at the most photographed church in New Zealand. Windows mirror beautiful scenery, giving travelers plenty to reflect on both inside and out. The exterior was constructed from lakeside rock complete with any existing lichen growth. The interior reflects warm simplicity of natural materials. Rough plastered cream walls contrast with dark stained exposed rimu ceiling beams and oak pews. The Oamaru stone altar is a world famous landmark depicting Jesus carrying the lamb in strong, clear lines carved by Welsh artist Frederich Gurnsey. Gurnsey also carved relief images of of edelweiss, mountain lilies, and keas on the stone font. Couples from throughout the world come to Church of the Good Shepherd for its Christian destination weddings and reaffirmation ceremonies. A more awesome backdrop of scenery in which to reflect upon a wedding ceremony afterward would be hard to find. Complete packages are offered by area wedding services, including NZ licensing documentation, minister, organist and wedding coordination. Other available services are videography, photography, post wedding helicopter photo tours, flowers, wedding cake, accommodation, transportation, hair and makeup, tuxedo hire, music, New Zealand food and drink, and even garden parties. Customized selections may include bagpipes, string quartet, harpist, or violinist plus a selection of bands and DJs for receptions. Personalized vows, poems, readings, and unity candle lighting are other choices. Reception options vary from traditional guest parties to a romantic candlelit dinner for two, or a private picnic on the beach. Even engraved goblets personalized with wedding details are available. Although Church of the Good Shepherd is overseen by Anglican/Presbyterian ministeries, a local priest is available for Catholic weddings. Whether Church of the Good Shepherd is your travel destination to exchange serene wedding vows or simply a stop for quiet reflection while visiting Mount Cook or Lake Tekapo, there’s no better place to worship picture perfect nature on your New Zealand vacation. |
