On the original site of the University of Canterbury, the The Arts Centre of Christchurch is home to a wide range of cultural activity. Every Saturday and Sunday bursts artist, craftspeople and musicians gather for the International Food Fair and the Art Craft and Produce Market near the Arts Centre Christchurch. Over 80 stallholders offer local art & crafts of top quality — excellent New Zealand gifts for friends and relatives — while you may find fresh produce along with an array of global cuisine in the Food Fair. Enjoy live entertainers as they perform daily during the noon hour and into the early afternoon.

Encounter history in Rutherford’s Den! Recognized internationally as the Father of the Atom, Lord Rutherford was born in New Zealand. He graduated in 1894 from Canterbury College, and began his lifetime research working in electrical technology. Commemorating and celebrating the achievements of Lord Rutherford, multimedia exhibits allow visitors to experience his life and science. You can also listen to recollections of his character and other historic broadcasts as you are transported through time to view life in the 1890’s at Canterbury College.

One Friday per month from February to November the Centre offers The Friday Lunchtime Concert Series. Audiences are treated to a vibrant and engaging experience in the historic setting of the beautiful Great Hall. The Series began in 1989 and offers visitors a variety of musical styles, performed by world renowned musicians, while offering musicians the chance to perform in a supportive environment.

The Living History project is an effort to collect stories from past students and lecturers about an experience or experiences on campus. The goal is to create a permanent record of these stories, which will be used in future recordings and publications.
